Lesson one (90 minutes)
1. Pre-activity (1): The instructor asks the students few questions: Do you follow fashion? What sort of clothes do you like? What is the fashion in your culture? This is an engaging way to collect the students’ thoughts on the topic. (5 minutes).
2. Pre-activity (2): Before starting the lesson, the group as a whole looks at different pictures of cartoons on the screen to brainstorms words to describe them. This will help students to pool what they know about the topic and share their knowledge in the target language. (5 minutes).
3. Vocabulary: It is important to provide the students with an opportunity to become familiar with words from the lesson. These words will be beneficial as well to students outside of the text. (5 minutes).
4. Listen and try to find the best match (Brides and grooms): The instructor gives each student 2 sets of pictures. The first one for men and the second one for women. Each person in each set has different physical features (hair color, weight, height, etc) and different articles of clothing. The instructor reads the preferences for each person’s future spouse and the students look through their set of pictures to match brides and grooms based on their preferences. The activity could then be repeated one or two times by having a different scenario so the students can practice more and familiarize themselves with the new vocabulary. The goal of this activity is to generate interest, build confidence and to facilitate comprehension. (10 minutes).
5. Listen and draw: The instructor would give four different descriptions and the students draw a picture based on the instructor’s description
First draw: Sandra is tall and thin. She is 30 years old. She has blond curly hair, green eyes and fair skin. She is wearing a beautiful long blue dress and white shoes.
Second draw: George is tall and heavy. He is 45 years old. He has short gray hair, blue eyes, and light skin. He is wearing green shirt, blue jeans, black hat and yellow shoes.
Third draw: Adam is a short and thin. He has dark short hair, hazel eyes. He is wearing black suit, and dark sun glasses.
Fourth draw: A young girl is 15 years old. She tall and thin, she has long brown hair, brown eyes. She is wearing a red t-shirt, green skirt, pink hat and black boots.
Once each drawing is complete, the instructor can go over the description to ensure that the students have correct description and understating of the listening exercise. This helps the teacher to see if the students are understanding and they will often ask questions if they don’t understand because they’ll be so keen to the picture. (15 minutes).
6. Describe pictures: The class will be divided into small groups, three students each. The instructor gives several pictures to review and the students’ task is to provide the most accurate description possible. Each group member chooses a few images from the pictures that were given and studies them for a few minutes. Afterwards, he/she will describe them to other group members. For each picture students must include the approximate age, weight and height, skin tone, color and length of hair and what he/she is wearing. (15 minutes).
7. Opinion poll: The instructor gives each student a chart; the chart has 4 slots with eight different categories: Name, age, nationality, height, skin tone, color and length of hair and what sort of clothes they like? What is the fashion in their culture? The students try their best to communicate with the classmates to fill out their handout. This will help students to practice the new vocabulary words using the communicative approach method. (10 minutes).
8. Using technology: (Video) Choose one of your favorite movie star from the following website and create a short (minimum 2 and maximum 3 minute) video clip describe his/her physical appearance. Use as many words as possible and then upload it to moodle. Your video clip must have a title page and a final page .
